The most likely location for a cavity to develop on your child's tooth is on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. These surfaces are not as smooth as other areas of your teeth. Rather, there are tiny grooves that can be ideal areas for trapping bacteria and food particles. Toothbrushing doesn't always address these dark, moist little crevices, creating the perfect conditions for tooth decay.
What's more, newly erupted permanent teeth are simply not as resistant to decay as adult teeth are. As we age, the enamel coating that protects teeth changes and becomes hard and more resistant to decay.
First and foremost, Dr. Stafford will thoroughly examine the tooth or teeth and conduct a full evaluation to determine if dental sealants would be a good treatment option for your child.
The tooth is then cleaned and an ADA-approved sealant is then applied on the surface of the tooth in liquid form, which hardens in about a minute. This protective surface typically lasts for up to 10 years. During this time, your child will benefit from a preventive treatment plan proven to reduce decay by as much as 70 percent.
As always, we take time to discuss every treatment option for you and your family. If you have questions or would like to schedule a consult with Dr. Stafford, please call our office.
